Five Song Friday 5/05/17

Alison Wonderland- Shape of You (Cover) (May 2017)

One of the biggest songs on the radio this past year gets a great remix from an up and coming DJ in Alison Wonderland. In a very male dominated field Alison stands out as a supremely talented DJ and this song is an example of that. While definitely adhering to the feel of Sheeran’s original this sounds like a completely new and original song. While there is a remix of the cover of the original...confusing I know, the first cover by Alison is fantastic so check it out.

Sonny Alven feat Emmi- Our Youth (Sept 2015)

A song that’s over a year old but it’s new to me so whatever. I really like this style of music, an uplifting, upbeat song that has a little tropical and wanderlust-y feel. The vocals remind me of “Big Girls Don’t Cry” in the beginning but it quickly develops into its own song from there. I like the entirety of the song, there aren’t any down moments, it stays interesting throughout. I feel like this is begging to be on one of those youtube travel compilation videos with people cliff diving or running around on the beach or on boats or whatever. It probably has been, I’m pretty late to the party for this one. Whatever, it’s a good song check it out.

Song: 8/10

A$AP Ferg feat Remy Ma- East Coast (April 2017)

One of the most overlooked rappers in my opinion is Ferg, he already has a handful of classic songs and he’s only been around a couple years. This song definitely has the possibility of reaching that level. Especially with Remy Ma’s verse which really sets this song apart, aparrently loaded with subliminal disses toward Nikki Minaj who she’s had conflicts with in the past. The video is one of my favorite parts, it has SO many nods to late 90s early 00s rap videos everything from the cinematography to the outfits just screams nostalgia. If you’re a fan of older rap definitely check the video out it’s worth the watch.

Song: 7.5/10                                                                                                                         Video: 9/10

Marshmello- Moving On (May 2017)

Yes another Marshmello song but when one of my favorite DJs put out a new song I gotta talk about it. Marshmello is famous for his bouncey upbeat songs and this fits right in there. A little more video game sounding than his other stuff if that makes sense but still a quality song. This doesn’t shoot up my list but is definitely not the worst thing he’s put out (looking at you summertime). I love the video which is supremely timely as graduation is right around the corner for people. I do like the subtle nods to Mello’s friends in the industry as he runs around with high school versions of Slushii, Skrillex, and Ookay all supremely talented in their own right. Just a fun song, not winning any awards but a great addition to the catalogue.

Song: 7.5/10                                                                                                                             Video: 8.5/10

Flume feat Kucka- Hyperreal (May 2017)

Flume is one of those super underrated producers in America but when I was in New Zealand he was being played on the radio before EDM was even mainstream. In case you missed it he’s huge over there. This song is super original and feels like it’s getting played backwards half the time which is super creative. While not garnering the mainstream success that some of his other songs have achieved this is a quality song that is an interesting listen for anybody. It’s hard to pin down the sound, you’ll just have to check it out for yourself.

Song: 6.5/10
